According to sociologist Erving Goffmann, our identities are performances om a series of overlapping stages. We decide hat to hide and what to disclose and there are also elements of leakage, what they call "cues given off", what gamblers would call a tell. When you talk about our online presence, we have the ability to curate what we present even more than we do in a concrete world. Most of us could walk past you on the street or talk to you on the phone and never know it was you. So do we know you? Yes, sorta, and generally only the things you want us to know.
